ZEOTHERM® TPVs LEAD TO SPI DESIGN AWARD

March 29, 2005

Zeotherm® TPVs continue to win accolades in the design community for enabling engineers to design automotive parts combining superior heat resistance and nylon overmold adhesion – features not found in conventional thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs).

The latest accolade – the 2005 New Product Design Award, Automotive from the Society of the Plastics Industry’s (SPI) Structural Plastics division – has been awarded to Innatech (molder) and CooperStandard (Tier 1) for their innovative and cost-effective use of Zeotherm TPVs with nylon on the 2005 Ford Mustang convertible.

The Mustang convertible replaced a traditional rubber-metal load-bearing touch-off molding with an all-plastic deck lid closeout panel comprised of Zeotherm 100-series TPV multi-shot overmolded to glass-filled nylon (A. Schulman).  This innovative design allows for a trim piece that visually matches the clean lines and appearance of the Mustang’s other seals, while retaining structural rigidity and reducing part weight and cost.

Zeotherm TPVs were selected for the touch-off molding due to their ability to survive the Southwest desert sun and heat without delamination from nylon – a condition common to conventional TPVs.  Zeotherm TPVs, which are based on a plastic phase of nylon, chemically bond to rigid nylons, forming an inseparable interface from edge to edge on the part.

The SPI award is the second time the Mustang Zeotherm TPVs touch-off molding has been recognized by the plastics community for its innovativeness.  In November 2004, the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE), Automotive Division, awarded the part its 2004 Innovation Award, Materials category.

Zeon produces TPVs under the Zeotherm brand name.  Zeotherm TPVs are the world’s leading thermoplastic elastomers capable of withstanding long-term heat and oil exposure from –40° to
175°C.  For more information, visit www.zeotherm.com or contact Zeon at 502.775.2000.
